Song background:

This hymn is about our personal commitment to follow Christ: to take upon us His name, follow His example, be His disciple, and to remember Him always.  It is also a prayer and plea asking for Christ’s help to overcome Satan, his power, and his temptations.   Versions are included in both English and Spanish.

Lyrics: Verse 1:

Oh, Christ shall my example be,
Both now and through eternity.
His simple life, though from above,
Doth teach us be humble and love.

And Christ did grow from grace to grace,
As God our Father He obeyed.
His earthly parents He did show
Respect and honor here below.

Verse 2:

A life of challenge filled with trial,
Yet Christ with courage did prevail.
Over sorrow and temptation great,
Christ overcame when He was tried.

Christ gave the glory and honor
To God above in His splendor.
Oh may my life say like the Son.
Oh God our Father, thy will be done!

Verse 3:

Beloved Savior, I do plead,
Please help me in my hour of need.
For Satan seeks to tempt me now,
My weakness use o’er me for pow’r.

Oh Lord please now my strength renew;
From thee I ever learn anew.
I’ll follow thy example sure
In faith, love, and devotion true.

Chorus:

I turn my heart in love,
To Christ our Lord above.
I shall be His disciple;
His example follow.

I take His name upon me
And witness to the end,
I shall remember always
Christ our Lord and friend.
