Song background:

An original hymn.  The first verse tells the story of Helaman's Stripling Warriors.  The second verse focuses on us in our own time fighting against fear, hate and suffering.  I wrote this lyric because of what I see as a gap in our hymnal:  There is nothing directly about mothers or motherhood.  Suitable for any group and especially for youth.

The text received the Award of Distinction in the 2018 Church Music Submission but has been altered since that time.

An alternative tune ("Stripling") is also available on this site.

Lyrics: Two thousand valiant-hearted youth Learned courage at their mothers' feet. Raised up in soberness and truth, they stood a fearsome foe to meet. Their fathers' precious liberty they weighed above their mortal life. In power they met their enemy, preserved by God throughout the strife. Their faith in Christ would bear them through: They did not doubt their mothers knew.

Now stand we like those youth of old, By righteous mothers taught to love The words of grace by prophets told And sacred counsels from above. We wield the Holy Spirit's sword and bear the shield of steadfast faith. We place our trust in Christ the Lord, and battle suffering, fear and hate. With hearts alight from Heaven's glow, we do not doubt our mothers know.
