In researching the background on this, I found a digital scan of the 1908 Polish hymnal that contains the version on which the English abridgement and adaptation is based. The 1920 English adaptation contains a melodic transcription error that has been perpetuated in most English versions ever since. In this arrangement that error is retained in measure 14 followed by the original melody in measure 16. Most of the English words share little thematically with the original Polish lyrics, which is why I didn't list them as a translation. The lyrics for "Stars Were Gleaming" also bear little resemblance to the original Polish lyrics.
