More about Donnalynn Grunewald:
Most of my music is original. Because I have lived in small branches for most of my life, I try to write songs that can be performed by a small group or a choir of inexperienced singers.
Song background:

I often wonder how Joseph might have felt when he discovered that Mary was with child. Was he worried? hurt? angry? I think he must have been a remarkable man in his own right to become Mary’s husband despite whatever rumors might have surfaced concerning her pregnancy. I think of him as a quiet, humble man – one willing to submit to God’s plan for his life. I can only imagine the weight on his shoulders as he held the Son of God for the first time and realized what a great responsibility was his. In this song, I have imagined Joseph talking to the baby Jesus and pledging to do his best as his foster father.

I have had the opportunity to hear a number of outstanding men sing this piece, and it gives me chills whenever I do. This just might be my favorite Christmas song.

Lyrics: Jesus, let me tell you of a man
A simple man – a humble man -
Who never thought to play this part,
Just a carpenter who gave his heart to Mary,
Sweet Mary.

Betrothed, she and I were bound to wed.
An angel came – The angel said
That Mary, pure, would bear a son,
And she and I would be the ones to raise him,
And teach him.

Chorus: Jesus, can you feel these hands
Caress you through your swaddling bands?
Do you know they’ll work to teach you right?
Can you see inside my heart
And know I’ll strive to play the part
That God has given me – a guardian for Thee.

Jesus, how I wish that I could see
What lies ahead for you and me.
Though I claim you as my son
I know that you’re the Holy One of Israel
God has promised.

Chorus: Jesus, can you feel these hands
Caress you through your swaddling bands?
Do you know they’ll work to teach you right?
Can you see inside my heart
And know I’ll strive to play the part
That God has given me – a guardian for Thee.

God in Heav’n I ask you make me equal to this task,
That I may teach our son
To say, “Thy will be done.”
