How I love my mother, Brenda; my very first teacher in life. When I was eight, I had a desire to learn to play the piano and she began teaching me about the different notes. Then in Jr. High, my music teacher, Marvin Hill, understood the power of chords, and in one month, changed my life. Over the years, I've written different songs, both upon request, and to express the emotion I was feeling at the time. Each of these songs has a story of how it was written. (Which can also be found at www.power-plus-learning.com/debbs-music/) Each of these songs I dedicate to our loving Father in Heaven and Savior, Jesus Christ. I know They live. I know They love us perfectly and give us gifts and talents to share with others and make this world a better place. How grateful I am to Them for all I've been blessed with.
While living in Kaysville, Utah, I was asked to teach a Relief Society lesson on service, but all that was coming to my mind was a table full of tools... carpenter tools. I thought, "what do tools have to do with service?" I called a friend of mine (Julie Wall) and shared with her my dilemma. She was saying how important service was in building relationships. Then I knew... the spirit bore witness to me of the concept that just as Nephi was commanded to build a ship, so are we: Relationships (friendships, partnerships, companionships) and Stewardships (discipleships, apostleship) to name a few. I began writing my thoughts down and thought the song was finished.
Years later, Pres. Hinckley came out with his book, "Way to Be" in which he stressed the need to "Be Involved." I knew that was a perfect addition to the concept of building relationships. "Ship Builders" was completed with this addition in November of 2002.

Lyrics: Intro: Nephi was commanded by the Lord to build a ship.
A monumental process to precede his family's trip.
The ship would need to be complete before it left the shore,
so Nephi asked the question, "Lord, where shall I find ore?"
1. He began the process right then, seeking for the ore.
For he knew ore was but a tool in it's "potential" form.
Then the refiner's fire could make the ore into a tool
To use for many purposes when we follow rules.

while partnerships, companionships, learn to give and take.
