More about Zoe Erickson:
I have little formal musical training, but play a handful of instruments and dabble in composing/songwriting.
In the current hymnbook, "Praise to the Man" (which was written by W. W. Phelps about a month after Joseph and Hyrum were martyred) is sung to the tune "Scotland the Brave". However, W. W. Phelps indicated that it was to be sung to the tune of "Star in the East", a traditional American shapenote hymn. (Here is a recording of Star in the East on Youtube. It is an amazing Christmas song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSY2MYEvGBI&pp=ygUQc3RhciBpbiB0aGUgZWFzdA%3D%3D)
I came across this recording (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Le8mK36t4ZI) of it sung to the intended tune and I was blown clean away. I never particularly liked the truimphal feel of the setting in the hymnbook, but this intended tune changes the entire feel of the song -- it was meant to be mournful, not celebratory.
Anyway, I made a simple piano arrangement based on that video, and here it is. Sorry that the formatting is kind of weird.
I also included a lower version, as the original gets pretty high.
