More about Amanda Mae Howe:
Amanda Mae Howe has been playing the piano since she was six years old. She received her BM in Piano Performance from Brigham Young University – Idaho in 2022 and her MM in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Oklahoma in 2024. Establishing her private studio in central Pennsylvania, Amanda now excitedly shares her love of music with her piano students. Amanda has pursued arranging as a side interest from a young age when she and her siblings would make up songs together. As a pianist, she particularly loves arranging for this instrument to create beautiful music for worship and performance.
I was asked to play a musical number in sacrament meeting and thought I would write an arrangement of “He Sent His Son” – a long time favorite of mine. I put it off all week. A few days leading up to Sunday, a member of the bishopric asked how long the musical number was. As I hadn’t written it yet, I gave an estimate of three minutes. But his texted pushed me to finally get it together. Despite my procrastinating, the final product has come to be one of my favorite works and holds special meaning to me.
The piece opens uncertainly with a major seventh chord – a strange sound to those unaccustomed with it. How could the Father tell the world of love and tenderness? In a world that is so often filled with hardship, how could he really? The unstable introduction concludes enharmonically on a tritone – another sound which is jarring to the ear. Held out before resolving to the first tonic chord of the piece, the F major sounds like a home coming, a sense of stability that was missing in the wandering maze that preceded it.
