More about Ben Alder:
Ben Alder was born and raised in St. George, Utah. He took piano lessons from Jaime Stucki at age 8 until moving on to the organ at age 14 with Kathleen Briggs as his teacher. He now takes organ lessons with acclaimed keyboardist (organ, piano, etc.) in Washington County, Geoff Myers. He has played in LDS Tabernacles in St. George, Utah, Paris, Idaho, Brigham City, Utah and Logan, Utah and even was invited to play the 5 manual (keyboards) Salt Lake Tabernacle organ hosted by now deceased tabernacle organist, Robert Cundick. He loves composing, improvising and arranging hymns and songs.
Song background:

The hymn “Nearer, My God, to Thee” is one of the most famous hymns of reassurance in history. Used at the sink of the titanic on April 15th, 1912. The hymn arrangement is what I believe is arranged by the 1997 “titanic” film composer, John Horner who might have arranged it for the film is for a string quartet. I have transcribed it for an easy organ solo as similar as close as possible as I can to compare it to the original arrangement in the film. The hymn composer, Lowell Mason, born in Medfield, Massachusetts, wrote the hymn for Sarah Flower Adams. The hymn tune is named Bethany.

For preparing organ registration of this organ transcription, please use the following stops, indicating on what it was really like to hear the passenger sing the hymn as they were sinking:

1st verse: Manuals: 8’ Strings (No manual couplers)

Pedal: soft 16’ & 8’, manuals to pedal

2nd verse: Manuals: Add Manual Couplers

3rd verse: Manuals: Add 4’ Strings (if available)

(If no 4’ Strings, add 4’ Flutes.)

**Note: I could not put the registration in because the score will mess it up. Thanks for your cooperation.**

I hope you enjoy my organ transcription of maybe James Horner’s hymn arrangement of Nearer, My God, to Thee”
