Chronic church music geek, no hope of recovery in sight.
This was the first piece I ever wrote. Fifteen years ago I felt prompted to write a Christmas piece, so despite zero experience I sat down at the piano and started picking out a melody. Suddenly, I heard this piece playing in my head like an mp3, complete with the organ part. I wrote what I heard down the best I could, and over the years I have modified it bit by bit until I have gotten it fairly close to what it originally sounded like. I wrote the lyrics in less than 30 minutes, and they have never changed. The powerful imagery and haunting melody make it spiritual feast every Christmas Season. We have sung it every year in our Ward since 1997, and now an entire generation of kids has grown up hearing it, thinking it is a well-known work! Maybe now it will be.
