I originally thought this was a sad song and began arranging it as such. But in the process of working on it, I realized that is it also about wonderful things that sometimes occur in the midst of bleakness.
I wanted to give the melody to the cello for one of the verses. As the lyrics for the last verse initially convey inadequacy and self-doubt, it seemed like this was the place to let the cello bring out the melody as their "gift" while the vocalist musically tries to avoid the attention as they ponder whether they have anything fitting and worthy to give.
