The idea for this song was hatched about 12 years ago when I tried to write a song for my youngest son's baptism. The music and lyrics that I wrote at that time were my first ever attempt at writing sacred music and I have wanted to improve them ever since. Now that I have had more practice at the art, I recently undertook to improve that lovingly offered song. I expanded the lyrics to be applicable to convert baptisms as well as children. The idea is to pledge obedience and faithfulness to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, as we covenant to serve Him.
Lyrics: Verse 1 --
I'm baptized as a covenant
To follow Jesus Christ.
Obedience is my offering
To Him who paid me price.
Christ ransoms me, I am reborn.
He is my Savior, King.
The love I feel at this great thought
Compels my heart to sing!
Verse 2 --
The priesthood breth'ren say to me,
"Receive the Holy Ghost."
This gift my Father offers me
So He can hold me close.
As long as I love righteousness
His Spirit guides my way.
He'll warn, inspire, and comfort give.
He'll teach me as I pray.
Verse3 --
Each day, I'll search out gospel truths
On words of Holy Seers.
The sacrament, each wee, renews
My covenants through the years.
His never-failing love for me
Will build me from within.
I'm baptized gladly to proclaim,
I'll always follow Him.
