This arrangement includes all seven verses of the original poem in their original order. The lyrics are sometimes pared with the tune MAINZER, which is included in this arrangement altered to a minor key for the original verses 4 and 5.

With the origin of this poem being Christmas in the midst of the American Civil War, it is important to clarify that "each black, accursed mouth" in verse four is that of the cannons, not that of the enslaved Blacks. Thus the poet notes the pre-dawn ringing of Christmas bells in verse three and their sound of peace, goodwill and edification, which is then drowned out in verse four just after daybreak by the the sound of cannonfire—the sounds of war, animosity and destruction. In verse seven, the despair the cannonfire induces is ultimately overcome by the Christmas bells and their message of hope and goodwill.
