More about Scott Mains:
Scott Mains is a composer, arranger, and pianist. Scott lives near Hartford, Connecticut with his wife Jessica, and his two sons Penn, and Langston.
Song background:

My Fifth Great Grand Father James Bell operated a Tavern where was held a convention of delegates who resolved to oppose the ratification of the Constitution in prelude to what eventually became the Bill of Rights.

Later he was tried for treason. Though the charges were dropped, his son, who inherited the Tavern, changed its sign to the Sign of the Rattlesnake in protest.

In recent years, the tavern was partially demolished by the owner who was unaware of the history.  I wrote this song to honor my forefathers and the metaphor of their partially demolished tavern.  Sadly, it was too late for the tavern. This song is a prayer that it is not too late for my people.

Lyrics: From within these Tavern walls
And Independence Hall
Our fathers gave a law
To protect us all
But now these Tavern walls
And our nation and our laws
Start to crumble and to fall
Do you care at all
To Look at what we've done
tell me what will become
Of this nation under God
Indivisible
Will you stand up for your rights
and the rights of other men
From the first few lines of freedom
to the other ten
I'm burying my sword
and picking up my pen
So America will be free again

Chorus
Free again
free at last
if we can learn the lessons of our past
I still believe
in the dream
And America will be free again

Long before our fall
The father of us all
Gave a higher law
To perfect us all
Can you hear him call
With a voice so still and small
We can end this war
If we care at all
To Look at what we've done
And what we have become
A nation without God
Is not invincible
How can we love our God
If we can't love our fellow men
And keep these first and great commandments
And the other ten
If we learn to love our neighbors
as well as we love our friends
Then our families and our homes
Will finally start to mend
And America will be free again

Chorus

our fathers gave their names
yeah they wore em well
I hope that I live up to them
with the story that I tell
If I can make the difference
you know between heaven and hell
then I'll sing this song the freedom
ring it like a bell
And America
oh America
oh America
will be free again
