I wrote the words to the first verse of this song after learning that my brother and his wife were getting divorced.  I don't know if it was the proverbial "straw," but I was really down as it felt to me that things just kept not working out how "they were supposed to."  I wanted everything to be back to the way they were; back to normal.  I realized that like a falling leaf things would never be the "same," but things could somehow be "renewed" - leaves coming back in the Spring, and life returning someday to loved ones who have passed to the other side.  

I call this my "Doctrinally Incorrect" song, because 'coming back to me" isn't how it works.  But I haven't been able to bring myself to rework it as first written.  If anyone wants to take a stab at it, feel free.  Just please message me what you have.
