Song background:

This song was directly inspired and quoted from 2 Nephi 4:16-35. This prayer-like psalm that Nephi penned has always touched me as the real and relatable feelings of a struggling human soul who becomes aware of his true plight without the Atonement of Jesus Christ. I believe when one begins to be aware of Christ's intent and power to lift us from our challenges and heal us from our weakness, we begin to deeply relate to Nephi's words of inadequacy and praise that he offers to the Lord. It's beautiful and poetic, and I only wanted to put it to music, not change the integrity of Nephi's message.

Lyrics: Awake My Soul!

My heart doth ponder things of God,
His marv'lous works I've seen
Yet, O! The many things I lack!
My deficit is deep.
Oftimes I am encompassed
My sins with ease beset,
Can Thou, with even boundless pow'r
My broken soul perfect?

Refrain:
Awake, O my soul!
Rejoice, O my heart,
In mercy encircle Thou me!
Pray fill me with thy love,
Forever thee I'll trust.
Awake, O my soul, unto thee!

In greatest condescension though,
The Lord doth visit me
Awake my soul, make place no more,
For my soul's enemy!
Abundantly the Lord doth give
If I ask not amiss
Thou canst make me both clean and whole!
What joy surpasses this?

I’ll boldly lift my voice to thee,
Where grace lies at thy throne.
Enable me and strengthen me
To make thine arm my own!
Oh thou my Rock of Righteousness,
I’ll ever trust in thee,
Clear Thou my way, make straight my path
Please stay the gates for me!

(Refrain)
