This piece starts out with fifths, sevenths, and ninths; intervals that indicate power and mass--creation and protection. This is truly a musical expression of the hymn lyrics. The section starting at measure 26 is marked with suggested crescendos. The actual dynamic range of those is slight and not meant to drop down to piano each time, but rather to cumulatively rise and drop and rise to the fortissimo at measure 34. The idea of this section is to mimic those grand organ pedal runs. By measure 36, the entire piece begins to change into something more rhythmic and flowing that will climax with the full rendering of the basso A at triple forte in measure 56. Finally, at measure 62, the piece ends with a pianistic chant. This is such a magnificent hymn. I wanted an arrangement that reflected how I felt about it and the subject and that was immensely enjoyable to play.
