Seek First The Kingdom Of God

Vocal Solo

Words and Music by Craig Petrie

Original music and lyrics, with most of the lyrics taken from Matthew 6:25-34, where Jesus instructs his apostles to forget about the cares of the world and focus on God's kingdom.  This advice is good for everyone who serves in His kingdom, not just apostles!  Ranges (low to high) are Eflat-F for the soprano/tenor version and Bflat-C for the alto/baritone version.

The lilies of the field,
Consider how they grow;
See that they toil not,
They do not spin or sew,
Yet kings in their glory are not as arrayed.
Are ye not much better than they?
Seek not for raiment today.

CHORUS:
What shall ye seek for?
Where is thy trust?
The world bids the come,
What shall ye seek?
The kingdom of God!
Seek first the kingdom of God.

The fowls of the air,
Consider how they soar;
See they gather not,
Nor layeth up in store,
Yet Father in Heaven feedeth them each day.
Are ye not much better than they?
Seek not for food today.

CHORUS:
What shall ye seek for?
Where is thy trust?
The world bids the come,
What shall ye seek?
The kingdom of God!
Seek first the kingdom of God.

The world presses with its cares and sorrow,
How can ye give no thought for the morrow?

The lilies of the field,
The fowls of the air,
Both can live and grow
In Heavenly Father's care.
With all ye have need of faithfully placed there,
Have ye any burdens to bear,
But those of his kingdom to share?

CHORUS:
What shall ye seek for?
Where is thy trust?
The world bids the come,
What shall ye seek?
The kingdom of God!
Seek first the kingdom of God.
